Context
Tonik is the instrument plugin inside Flowtonik, the thing that loads when you
put an instrument on a MIDI track. It isn’t one instrument. It’s three: a
sampler, a subtractive synth and a drum kit, marked in the preset name as SMP,
SYN and DRM.
The three could easily have been three products, or three windows, or one window with a mode selector and three unrelated layouts behind it. They’re one window with one preset navigator across the top and one keyboard along the bottom, and everything between those two fixed rails changes completely depending on what you loaded.
The problem
Soft synths are traditionally designed for people who already understand synthesis. The convention is a single dense panel showing every parameter at once: oscillators, filter, envelopes, a modulation matrix, effects. The theory is that visible depth signals capability.
For someone who can hear the sound they want but couldn’t name a filter envelope, that panel is a wall. The parameters are all present and none of them are answerable. The standard escape hatch, a preset dropdown, usually resolves to a list of names in a menu, which teaches nothing about what changed.
Bundling three instrument types together usually makes this worse rather than better. Each type arrives with its own conventions. A sampler wants a waveform and a root key, a drum machine wants pads, a synth wants an oscillator section. The honest result is three interfaces wearing one badge, where the only thing you carry from one to the next is the logo.
What I built
Two rails that never move. The preset navigator sits across the top and a full C2–C8 keyboard sits along the bottom, in every mode. Whatever you load, the two things you do most, changing the sound and playing it, are in the same place they were a moment ago. Everything else in the window is free to be completely different, because those two aren’t.
Depth is proportional to the instrument, not uniform across the product. The sampler gets two knobs. The synth gets four tabs and roughly thirty parameters. The drum kit gets sixteen pads and three knobs for whichever one is selected. A consistent product would have given all three the same amount of surface; this gives each one as much as its job actually needs, and no more.

The sampler is the clearest statement of this. A loaded piano is already the sound; the decisions left are how loud and how wet. So the window shows the spectrum at full width and offers Volume and Reverb, and declines to invent anything else to fill the space.

Drum mode makes the same trade differently. Sixteen pads are named for what they
are (KICK, SNARE, CH, OH, CRASH) rather than numbered, so finding the
hi-hat is reading rather than remembering. Selecting one reveals exactly three
controls beside it. The alternative, a full channel strip per pad, would be more
capable and would turn a sixteen-pad kit into sixteen things to configure.
Four tabs in signal order. OSC, FILTER, MOD, FX: the path the sound actually takes through the instrument, left to right. Splitting one dense panel into four costs a click and buys something better. Each screen is a small enough set of decisions to reason about, and the tab bar itself teaches the architecture of a synth to someone who didn’t know it had one.

The controls are pictures of what they do. The five waveform buttons are each drawn as that waveform. A sine is a sine. This is the smallest decision in the instrument and one of the most useful: it means the oscillator row is legible to someone who has never read the word sawtooth, without a tooltip, a manual or a label they’d have to trust.

Envelopes are shapes, not knob rows. Both the filter envelope and the amp envelope are drawn as a single filled curve rather than the conventional four ADSR knobs. Attack, decay, sustain and release are abstractions you have to learn; a shape that rises, holds and falls is the sound itself, drawn. It also makes the relationship between the four values visible at a glance, which four separate knobs never do.
Each LFO reads as a sentence. Shape, destination, rate, depth: two dropdowns and two knobs, so LFO 1 says a sine wave, moving the filter, this fast, this much. Most synths express modulation as a matrix, which is more powerful and, for anyone below expert, unusable. Two fixed LFOs with an explicit destination picker covers the overwhelming majority of what people actually reach for.

The effects rack is deliberately not a rack. Three effects, fixed, in three equal panels: chorus, delay, reverb. No slots, no ordering, no adding a fourth. Each is a checkbox and three knobs, and the third knob is always Mix, so the last question is the same question every time and the answer transfers from one effect to the next.
The preset is the largest thing on screen. The patch name, “Metallic Bells” here, is set bigger than any parameter, with prev/next arrows beside it in the navigator. Browsing sounds doesn’t require opening a dialog. It’s arrow, arrow, arrow while the keyboard is under your hands. The instrument’s default posture is pick a sound; editing is the thing you graduate into.
Loading a preset is how you change instrument. The SMP / SYN / DRM
prefix travels with the preset, so stepping through the navigator moves you
between a piano, a bell synth and a psytrance kit without ever choosing an
instrument type as a separate act. There’s no mode selector because the mode is a
property of the sound, and the sound is the thing anyone actually came for.
